Urban School Leans on Music Education to Thrive

Performance Today, November 17, 2004 – In the third installment of our music education series, NPR’s Korva Coleman visits an urban at-risk school that was in danger of failing. Baltimore’s Roland Park Elementary is an older urban school, with a third of its students enrolled in a free or reduced-price lunch program.

Roland Park principal Mariale Hardiman decided to aggressively promot music and arts programs and turned the school’s academic performance around. The most recent reading and math assessments showed that Roland Park fourth graders scored in the 90th percentile.
